My One Word: Speak

I have been waiting for my word. Waiting longer than I wanted. I was ready back in December, when I had my 2019 calendar and new notebook waiting. I was ready to be lit on fire and filled with purpose. I wanted a word that had momentum, and light, and would put me on the path I wanted. I had a blog post ready, filled with all the words, ready to inspire others as we got ready to turn the page to 2019. I was ready.

But God said wait.

The word, or really two words, and Bible verse for our family came like a gift. It was so clear and fit our family and current situation perfectly. It spoke to our family’s truth and put us on a clear path forward and toward God. Not just for this year, but forever. There was purpose and action and love. I ordered a print of the words and put them on our wall. But they were our family’s words, and I knew God had something more for me.

And still, God said wait.

I took out my empty notebook and wrote down our family verse and words and three img_6893things I felt God calling our family to in this new year. I turned the page and wrote down “My One Word for 2019” and made a place for my word. Then I wrote down every word that came to me. I just dumped them onto the page. I wrote over 50 words. All of them good and fitting words, but none of them seemed right. I had about three words that struck me the first weeks of January. I would write them down on scratch paper to see how they looked. I worked ideas and plans around those words, but there was always something a little off. They worked if I looked at them in a certain light, but in the darkness, they didn’t hold true.

My notebook looked the same, until today.

“No go, I will help you speak and teach you what to say.”

Exodus 4:12

Speak.

In 2018 I became and in 2019 I will speak.

  • I will allow God to speak into my heart and every area of my life.
  • I will speak truth into dark place.
  • I will speak God’s truth into our children.
  • I will speak to crowds big and small. (I already have two speaking engagements on the books for March.)
  • I will speak less and listen more.
  • I will allow God to speak through me.
  • I will speak truth to lies and love to hate.
  • I will speak slowly when my words want to rush out in anger.
  • I will speak truth to anxiety and fear, for they are not of God.
  • I will say “Speak, God. I am your servant, ready to listen.” 1 Samuel 3:9

And this is only the beginning. The list goes on and on and as far as God will take me this year.

“My Spirit, who is on you, and my words that I have put in your mouth will not depart from your mouth, or from the mouths of your children, or from the mouths of their descendants from this time on and forever,” says the Lord.”

Isaiah 59:21

May I listen more than I speak, and may the words that I speak be a sweet balm to your soul.

January Whole 30 Challenge – Week 1

New Year. Same You (but with a few tweaks).

My husband and I are diving into the new year and joining the Whole 30 January Challenge. If you don’t know what Whole 30 is, you can learn all about it here. Our family already focuses our meals around fresh, whole and healthy foods, as well as boxed mac and cheese some nights so the children will eat. It’s all about balance. For the next 30 days, we are cutting out: gluten, soy, sugar, alcohol, grains, dairy and legumes. After 30 days, we’ll start adding a few healthy items back.

Here are a couple of notes for our family:

  • Our family: two adults and 5 children (ages 14. 12. 9, 7, 2 1/2)
  • Wednesdays we have dinner at church. The children will go ahead and eat what is provided, but my husband and I will pack leftovers.
  • The 20th we are hosting a potluck, so I will make a Whole 30 compliant meal in the crock pot that everyone will enjoy.
  • We will make the children pasta or tortillas for some of their meals, but they will eat what we cook. Our normal rule for dinner: If you don’t like it after you try it, you can make a peanut butter sandwich, have yogurt and fruit. I do not make two meals.
  • The children will eat their normal foods for breakfast (unless we make a Whole 30 breakfast) and lunch.
  • Adult lunches will be leftovers, salads or one of the many ideas I’ve found. Breakfast will be more challenging since I normally eat yogurt every morning.
  • We set out meal plans Friday – Thursday because of our work schedules. We usually go shopping on Friday mornings.
  • Some of the recipes I will link may have one non Whole 30 ingredient, but we will substitute.

This is less diet and more intentional eating. It’s healthy choices with simple limits and good quality goods. Our results and outcomes will be different, but I’m excited to share them with you.

Week 1 Menu

Shrimp, Scallops & Cauliflower Rice

There is no recipe for this and something we normally cook. We saute the shrimp and scallops with a little avocado oil, salt and pepper. Remove shrimp and scallops and saute cauliflower rice until cooked. We will serve fresh tomatoes and avocados on the side.

Slow Cooker Hawaiian Shredded Chicken

Cranberry Rosemary One Pan Chicken

Spaghetti Squash with Roasted Mushrooms and Garlic

Enchilada Stuffed Sweet Potatoes

Orange Chicken with Fried Cauliflower Rice

 

 

Writing Your Dreams

When I was little, I dreamed about being a ballerina, singing on broadway, becoming a lawyer and going to an Ivy League school. These dreams played out in my imagination, my make-believe and even played a role in the decisions I made. My dreams changed as I became a high school student and again when I went off to college (at a wonderful, but non Ivy League university). My dreams were still there, although different, as a young adult, a new wife and as a mother. But, somewhere along the way, I lost sight of those dreams and forgot to make new ones.

As adults, we forget to dream. It’s as if we don’t have permission to dream anymore. I don’t believe that God ever wants us to stop dreaming. God has amazing plans for us and for our future. I still have some amazing, God-given dreams that I am dreaming.

Last night, I spent some time writing down a dream I have for the future. I put it down on paper and made a plan on how to move towards that dream. I actually numbered my page. I love checklists, but it also gave me a chance to be practical about this dream. Simple, basic, baby-steps to move toward my big, amazing, dream. It was hard and freeing to put it down on paper. It made my dream that I have rarely shared, real. I could see my words right before me in black and white. It became alive.

I am claiming it and praying about it and thanking God for it and MOVING on it! Nothing happens when we just sit on our dreams, and no one has permission to tell you your dreams aren’t good, or worthy, or are too big for your britches. They are yours to dream!
